Shark Point
|
About 1½ hours east of Phuket lies Shark Point, a small rock outcrop, and marine sanctuary which has a profusion of purple and pink soft corals and attracts large numbers of tropical fish. The small rock above the surface of the water forms the tip of a pinnacle leading to a much larger reef extending underneath. Strong currents sweeping over the pinnacle provide food for hundreds of different corals and Indo-Pacific tropical fish. The name of the site comes from the common Leopard (Zebra) shark (Stegastoma Varium), a docile creature which lies in the sand surrounding the pinnacle. These completely approachable, trusting sharks grow to lengths of a little over two metres and provide the highlight of any dive to Shark Point. |
